About the Course

Precalculus at Memphis Rise Academy is a high school mathematics course that prepares our student population for Calculus H and AP Calculus. This course covers many standards between August and June that will set students up for success on the ACT, in physical science, and for college-level mathematics coursework. Classes will integrate elements of direct instruction, independent work, and group work with an emphasis on collaboration in preparation for post-secondary pathways. There will be support every step of the way, but remember to ask for help from teachers and peers when necessary!

Responsibilities

Students will

  • come prepared to class with previous days’ resources, reference sheets, pencils or pens, notebook, and a growth mindset.
  • remain focused and alert during class instruction.
  • complete all in-class work urgently and keep notes organized for semester binder check.
  • review course material nightly and study before every exam.
  • turn in homework in a timely manner with 100% effort/completion.
  • attend office hours on an as-needed basis.

Students who are found cheating or copying assignments will receive an automatic zero.
Late Work: Assignments will drop to a 60% if turned in one day late. The grade will continue to drop each day the assignment is late.

Grading

Unit Assessments ————————————————————————————————————————————- 35%

Unit Assessments will be administered after every unit. Assessments will model classwork, homework, and AP style questioning. Students are expected to study for these exams at home. Students will have an opportunity to study with peers the day prior to the exam. Interim Assessments, administered by Memphis Rise once per quarter, will be factored into this portion.

Homework ——————————————————————————————————————————————— 20%

Homework will be given three to five times per week and should be completed independently, unless stated otherwise. Cheating/copying homework assignments will not be tolerated in this course. If you have a question about the homework, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Villani (see below). Homework scores should be 100% for all students.

Exit Tickets ———————————————————————————————————————————————–15%

Exit Tickets consist of one to two practice questions and will be collected several times per week to track students’ mastery of daily objectives. Students who actively participate in class should excel on all exit tickets.

Projects/Quizzes ————————————————————————————————————————————— 10%

Students will take quizzes and complete projects in between unit assessments. These assignments will be shorter than unit or interim assessments.

Classwork/Binder Checks/Participation ——————————————————————————————————— 20%

Students must complete classwork during instructional time. Binder checks will be held once per semester. Students will need to be able to locate particular lessons and exams in their course binder. Student are required to complete all missing coursework and assignments. Students can receive 100% participation credit based on effort and organization.
